The benches cleared i the Cubs-Pirates NL Wild Card game when Jake Arrieta got hit by a pitch.

The Pittsburgh Pirates took out their self inadequacies on the Chicago Cubs during the NL Wild Card game after Chicago pitcher Jake Arrieta was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning. It was something you could see happening, and even though it was completely pointless we saw the benches on both sides of the field clear out as the Pirates tried to get something going late in the game.

Arrieta was in the crosshairs thanks to hitting two Pirates players earlier in the game on two separate occasions on breaking balls that got away from him. It didn’t really seem like the pitches were intended to hit the batter they did, but that didn’t stop the Pirates from retaliating when Arrieta stepped into the batter’s box in the seventh inning.

Compounding everything is the fact that at the time of Arrieta getting hit, the Cubs were up 4-0 in a game that the Pirates didn’t want to lose. Not only would it end their season but it would be the third straight year that they were spanked out of the postseason in embarrassing fashion. Last year the Pirates were shutout and shutdown by the Giants and this year the Cubs have their number in the worst way.

Sean Rodriguez was ejected from the game for throwing more than a few punches, although most of the haymakers he landed ended up pushing nothing more than the Gatorade bucket.

It was more than just the two hit batters that cleared the benches in Pittsburgh, but that didn’t change the fact that the Pirates were toast well before they decided to get aggressive.
