Rams get first down on beautiful fake punt (Video)
The Rams ran a fake punt against the Packers and it worked wonderfully
Late in the third quarter against the Green Bay Packers in Lambeau Field, the St. Louis Rams found themselves down by 11 points and needing to get momentum on their side. The best way Jeff Fisher could think to do that was by catching the Packers off guard on fourth down with a fake punt.
Things didn’t start out well on the trick play, as the primary target for the pass tripped coming into his route and the pocket began to collapse on Johnny Hekker. Hekker wasn’t fazed, though, and he channeled his inner quarterback by rolling to his right and tossing up an arching 20-yard lob that was collected by a diving Cody Davis.
That would be a heck of a play if it were a starting NFL quarterback throwing it, much less the Rams’ punter. Someone give Hekker an eight-figure deal to play quarterback right now.
Hilariously, that catch made Davis the Rams’ leading receiver for the day with 20 yards, despite the fact that he’s a defensive back largely used for special teams.
Despite the nice play by Hekker, it was ultimately all for naught as the Rams walked away from the drive with zero points after their field goal attempt was blocked. They probably should’ve just let Hekker chuck it again.
