The Saints defense helped Sam Bradford and the Eagles find the end zone

The New Orleans Saints secondary had been making Sam Bradford and the Philadelphia Eagles look silly in their Week 5 matchup. The defense picked Bradford off in the red zone twice in the first quarter alone. However, they only made themselves look silly at the start of the second quarter.

Bradford hit Josh Huff on a simple 10-yard slant route that should have resulted in a first down and probably not much more. Instead, two Saints defenders tripped over and tackled one another, giving Huff a free path to the end zone for six points to tie the game:

I’m not a professional football coach, but I’m pretty sure you should probably tell your defensive players not to tackle one another in the open field when they’re the last line of defense. That has a perfect track record of not working out well for the defense.

That error by the Saints is even more egregious considering that they’re just getting in their own way. Bradford had been making enough mistakes and bad plays to that point that it was clear New Orleans had the advantage and momentum. Then a play like that happens and it’s all evened up.
