Marques Colston separated his shoulder in the New Orleans Saints’ Week 5 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

According to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, New Orleans Saints veteran wideout Marques Colston separated his shoulder in the team’s Week 5 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. If there is structural damage, Colston could miss significant time in 2015.

This is a tough blow for the New Orleans Saints. New Orleans sits at 1-4 entering a short week, as they will host their arch rival, the Atlanta Falcons, on Thursday Night Football. After missing quarterback Drew Brees in Week 3’s loss to division rival Carolina, it seems that the Saints won’t have the services of their most veteran wideout in Marques Colston.

Colston is the all-time leading receiver in the Big Easy, leading the Saints in career receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. The former 7th round pick out of Hofstra has made a living catching touchdown passes from Brees in the red zone.

It seems that Brees will not have Colston in Week 6 at the very least. New Orleans would love nothing more than to spoil their nemesis’ undefeated season by knocking off the 5-0 Falcons in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Thursday Night Football.

The Saints have one of the weakest offensive lines in football, even after trading for center Max Unger from Seattle for tight end Jimmy Graham. Brees rarely has time to deliver accurate passes in the pocket. Now he will have to pick apart the Falcons’ defense without his most familiar receiving target.

General Manager Mickey Loomis has put this team in salary cap purgatory and a 1-5 start in the Big Easy might put head coach Sean Payton and defensive coordinator Rob Ryan on the hot seat. Losing a reliable receiving target like Marques Colston for a significant amount of time might stand as too much to overcome for the Saints to overcome in 2015.
