The Toronto Blue Jays rode into the ALCS on the heels of Jose Bautista’s home run and bat flip, not the city’s mayor is throwing down his own.

A little bit of trash talk between city mayors is no new occurrence during big sporting events. The highest office of city politics are always throwing down side bets and rhetoric leading up to pivotal postseason series between their respective cities. The mayors of Toronto and Kansas City are no different and both are throwing down the gauntlet leading into the American League Championship series between the Toronto Blue Jays and Kansas City Royals.

Well, the Toronto mayor is throwing down a bat instead.

Responding to a bet offered by Kansas City mayor Sly James, who offered up some ribs and barbecue sauce from some of K.C.’s finest joints, the Toronto mayor went all-in while accepting the bet, including trying to channel his inner Jose Bautista with an excessive bat flip at the end of the speech,

By now, the Bautista bat flip from his ALDS go-ahead home run is famous and the Toronto mayor wanted to capitalize on that rush. However, as you can see, he failed miserably with his barely “excuse me” style toss of the bat that will likely become a how-to from purists everywhere. It certainly didn’t carry the emphasis that Bautista’s emphatic toss did on Wednesday.

Adding insult to injury, the Toronto mayor even forgot to offer up how he would settle up his end of the bet. However, perhaps his proclamation of Toronto’s stronger beer would likely be an apt prize for Kansas City should they survive the Jays.
