3. Leonard Fournette still leads the Heisman race

LSU running back Leonard Fournette is in the process of putting together a season for the ages. The sophomore phenom has already rushed for 1,202 yards this year, averaging a little over eight yards per carry. He has more rushing touchdowns (14) than most FBS teams.

(Man, it’s a shame he can’t play on Sundays next year.)

Fournette’s Tigers hosted the undefeated Florida Gators on Saturday night, and once again Fournette was the star of the show. He ran his way around and through the Florida defense, showcasing his unique combination of agility and power, and added a few moments to his ever-growing highlight reel.

Fournette finished with 31 carries for 180 yards and two touchdowns, and the Tigers knocked off the Gators by seven points. It wasn’t Fournett’e most jaw-dropping game, but that just goes to show the absurd level he’s playing at: for Fournette, 180 yards and two touchdowns is a solid game, but an unspectacular one. That’s ridiculous.

Plenty of other players are having great seasons in 2015, but right now Fournette is the Heisman front-runner. Stanford’s all-purpose weapon Christian McCaffrey is receiving some national attention following his great performance against the UCLA Bruins on Thursday night, but it’s unlikely he’ll have the overall numbers at season’s end to compete with Fournette. There’s wide receiver Corey Coleman at Baylor — more on him in the next slide — but winning the Heisman as a wide receiver isn’t easy. Then of course there’s Trevone Boykin at TCU, who has been lighting up defenses all season. Boykin’s numbers through the air are every bit as impressive as Fournette’s on the ground, but the national perception of the SEC being a far better defensive conference than the Big 12 is an advantage for Fournette.

There are plenty of Heisman contenders at this point in the year, and a lot can change in these next few weeks, but the award is Fournette’s to lose.
