After a review sent Royals‘ shortstop Alcides Escobar to first base, Jeremy Guthrie braced for Blue Jays fans throwing stuff into the dugout.

The fear of flying objects has proven to be a legitimate phobia in Toronto. After fans littered the field in garbage during the ALDS against the Texas Rangers because of a controversial call, Kansas City Royals pitcher Jeremy Guthrie was taking no chances at Toronto in Game 4 of the ALCS.

After a review of a play showed that Alcides Escobar was hit on the hand by a pitch, he was awarded first base. With a testy Toronto crowd, Guthrie braced for impact in the dugout.

There probably isn’t a standard procedure that players are taught to prepare for in the event of flying objects, but it appears that Guthrie had enough foresight to be ready just in case.

With the Royals jumping on the Blue Jays early and having a chance to push Toronto to the brink of elimination in the ALCS, the Toronto crowd probably isn’t in the mood for any close calls that could swing the game out of reach.

Luckily for Guthrie, the fans reacted a lot more kindly to this review than that of the one in the ALDS, when play had to be halted for several minutes after the crew ruled that Rougned Odor of the Texas Rangers was allowed to score, giving Texas a one-run lead in the seventh inning. Toronto would go on to win the game, and the series.
