On Thursday Night Football, the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers are playing what basically amounts to a playoff game. Both teams are 2-4, and the loser would be staring at a climb that is not favorable. At 2-5, either team would likely be buried without much chance of reaching the playoffs.

For the 49ers, this would not be a huge surprise. Under first-year and first-time head coach Jim Tomsula, not much was expected of the boys from the Bay Area. The team went through a mass exodus of talent in the offseason, ranging from linebackers Chris Borland, Patrick Willis and Aldon Smith, to cornerback Chris Culliver and defensive end Justin Smith. And that is only the defense. On offense, San Francisco jettisoned receiver Michael Crabtree, guard Mike Iupati and running back Frank Gore.

On the other sideline, the pressure to win this game is through the provberial roof. Seattle was expected to make the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year and be a true contender for a third straight Super Bowl berth. Instead, the team has looked sloppy and disinterested, allowing a league-high 26 sacks while the Legion of Boom has allowed two large fourth-quarter comebacks over the past two weeks. Suddenly, they are becoming the Legion of Doom and Gloom.

The winner of the game will be 1.5 games behind the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC West, who are hosting the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football. San Francisco has already lost once to Arizona, while the Cardinals and Seahawks are yet to meet in 2015.
