Report: Seattle Mariners hire Scott Servais as manager
By Josh Hill
The Search for the new Seattle Mariners manager is over, as the team will hire former MLB catcher Scott Servais.
Last season was yet another year that the Seattle Mariners were supposed to compete, and they actually looked to be in the race for most of the season. That wasn’t good enough for Lloyd McClendon to keep his job as he was fired after the season ended in disappointment for the second straight year under his watch.
While Seattle isn’t a bad team, the job opening in the clubhouse wasn’t one that lit top candidates on fire — which was apparently not a problem for new general managers Jerry Dipoto. After less than a month of looking, Dipoto has found McClendon’s replacement and will officially announce the hiring of Scott Servais as the next manager of the team.
According to MLB beat writer Mike DiGiovanna, the Mariners will hire Servais to lead the team into the future.
Servais is an interesting choice, as it’s not often that an executive goes from the front office to the bench without it being awkward. That was the case when Miami Marlins general manager Dan Jennings took over the club as manager in the middle of the season in what seemed like a weird fantasy being played out in real life.
But Servais is a former catcher, and he’s no stranger to calling baseball games. That’s what works in his favor with this hiring, as it seems to be below the radar enough to not get anyone excited no but has the potential to look like a great move this time next year. Dipoto and Servais have history and chemistry, which is something the Mariners need moving forward after a decade of depression that has led the team deeper and deeper into the emotional sewer.
