30 greatest World Series in MLB history
21. Washington Senators vs. Pittsburgh Pirates, 1925
The 1925 World Series between the Washington Senators and the Pittsburgh Pirates featured two teams that found themselves in complete opposite situations when the season began. Washington had been crowned World Series champions the year before, while the Pirates had not won a National League Pennant in 16 years.
The Senators won three of the first four games, and all signs pointed towards Washington claiming back-to-back World Seires titles.
Walter Johnson dominated the series early on, delivering two complete games and allowing a total of one run in Games 1 and 4. Pittsburgh found a way to get its offense going against Washington’s Hall of Fame ace in Game 7, however.
Johnson allowed six runs through the first seven innings, but the Senators were still able to remain in the game, taking a one-run lead in the top of the eight. The Pittsburgh offense exploded for three runs in the bottom half of the inning, though, and Red Oldham entered the game to sit down the final three Washington batters and clinch the World Series.
Outfielder Max Carey had an incredible series for the Pirates, recording a .458 batting average, .552 on-base percentage and scoring six runs.
It was Pittsburgh’s second World Series title, and their last until 1960.
