12. Boston Red Sox vs. New York Giants, 1912

In 1912, the Boston Red Sox and New York Giants faced off in the first and only best-of-seven World Series to go to an eighth contest.

Previous World Series had gone to eight games, but that was when the MLB employed a best-of-nine format. This time, the extended series was due to an extra-innings matchup in Game 2 that was canceled due to darkness.

Game 8 capped off an intense series in fitting fashion. In addition to the tie in Game 3, the previous seven games featured three one-run contests, a trend that would continue in the deciding game.

New York took a 1-0 lead in the third inning and pitched a shutout until the bottom of the seventh, when the Red Sox even up the score. After two scoreless frames, the game went to extra innings.

The Giants took the lead again in the top of the 10th, and entered the bottom half of the inning just three outs away from a World Series title.

On the first play of the bottom of the 10th, however, outfielder Fred Snodgrass dropped a routine fly ball from Red Sox pinch-hitter Clyde Engle that would prove costly. Two walks, two sacrifice flies and an RBI single later, Boston was crowned World Series champions.
