30 greatest World Series in MLB history
9. New York Yankees vs. Brooklyn Dodgers, 1952
The New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers appeared in more World Series than any other teams from 1941 to 1956, and 1952 would mark the fourth of seven World Series showdowns between the crosstown rivals during this stretch.
The Yankees had won the previous three matchups, though after an intense first five games of the series, it appeared that streak could be in danger. The Dodgers took a 3-2 series lead back to Brooklyn after an extra-innings victory in Game 5, sending the Yankees to the brink of elimination.
Brooklyn took a 1-0 lead late in game six, and was just nine outs away from its first World Series title. New York fought back, however, and mounted a comeback to force a Game 7.
Allie Reynolds entered the game at pitcher for the Yankees in the fourth inning, his fourth appearance of the series. Riding a solid outing from Reynolds and a two-RBI performance from a 20-year old Mickey Mantle, New York clinched the championship with a 4-2 victory.
It was the Yankees’ fourth consecutive World Series victory, and their third in six years over the Dodgers. The next three years would feature a pair of equally thrilling Fall Classics between the two teams, with the tide finally shifting in Brooklyn’s favor in 1955.
