30 greatest World Series in MLB history
6. New York Giants vs. Washington Senators, 1924
The 1924 World Series between the New York Giants and Washington Senators featured four one-run games, including two that were decided in the final at-bat.
The Giants took a 3-2 lead as the teams headed back to Washington to close out the series, but the Senators would not go away quietly.
Tom Zachary pitched a complete game the following night and led Washington to a 2-1 victory, forcing a deciding Game 7. The Senators got on the board first, jumping out to a 1-0 lead. New York responded with three runs in the top of the sixth inning, only to have Washington tie the game in the bottom of the eighth.
Hall of Fame starting pitcher Walter Johnson entered the game in the bottom of the ninth and pitched four shutout innings, making up for losses in Games 1 and 5. With one out in the bottom of the 12th, a little known rookie named Earl McNeely stepped to the plate with the winning run on second base.
McNeely hit a ground ball to the left side of the infield that bounced over the third baseman’s head for a double, giving his team the walk-off victory.
1924 would mark the only time that the Senators would win the World Series in Washington. Their next title would not come until 1987, long after the franchise had moved to Minnesota and changed its name to the Twins.
