30 greatest World Series in MLB history
23. St. Louis Cardinals vs. New York Yankees, 1926
The 1926 World Series between the New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals featured two teams that dominated their respective leagues throughout the late 1920s.
The Yankees were led by two of the greatest hitters in history; Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. St. Louis had plenty of talent also. Their lineup featured five players hitting above .300, as well as Bob O’Farrell, the National League MVP.
The Cardinals took control early in the series, winning two of the first three games. New York would respond, though, defeating St. Louis 10-5 in Game 4 and tossing a shutout the following day.
The Yankees were blown out 10-2 in Game 6 at home, sending the series to a seventh game. The Cardinals fell behind early after Ruth launched a home run over the centerfield fence in the bottom of the third. St. Louis responded with three runs in the next frame, however, and that was all that was needed to secure a 3-2 victory. The game ended with Ruth being thrown out attempting to steal second base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
It was the first World Series title in franchise history for the Cardinals.
