Draft Picks

The Pelicans are once again an interesting case in terms of their offseason and the future of the team as they didn’t walk out of the 2015 NBA Draft with the rights to a single prospect. They only had one pick in the entire 60 picks of the draft and they traded away that pick, a late second-rounder, on draft night when all was said and done.

New Orleans would have had the 18th pick in the draft, but that was sent to the Houston Rockets after their trade last offseason with the Rockets that landed them center Omer Asik, whom we’ve already discussed. The Rockets used that pick to grab Sam Dekker, the talented forward out of Wisconsin.

Meanwhile, the one draft pick that the Pelicans did have going into draft night was the 56th-overall pick in the draft, which they used to take forward Branden Dawson out of Michigan State. That didn’t last long, though, as they traded Dawson’s rights to the Philadelphia 76ers on draft day in exchange for cash considerations.

All of that is to say that the Pelicans didn’t do anything to improve their roster in regards to the draft this offseason. However, that doesn’t mean that they completely stood pat as there were some players coming in and out via free agency and trades this summer.
