Draft Picks

The Detroit Pistons were in the lottery once again last season, their pick falling right in the middle of that lottery with the eighth-overall pick. However, in a talented draft class, the eighth pick offered the Pistons to make get a fantastic talent and fit when they selected Stanley Johnson from the Arizona Wildcats.

Arizona Wildcats. STANLEY JOHNSON. A.
Some people may detract from the Pistons for taking Johnson over the higher upside pick in Justise Winslow, but Johnson has looked fantastic in preseason and was already considered a beautiful fit in a Stan Van Gundy offense.

Johnson is a brilliant offensive talent that has the ability to create off the dribble, knock down shots from the mid-range, and step out beyond the arc and fill it up. A player that can space the floor and attack from anywhere on the floor is huge for a Van Gundy coached team.

Moreover, Johnson is still only 19 years old, which means there’s a ton of upside left for him to try and tap into as he gets accustomed to the league. However, I think he’s already going to be fantastic in Detroit and could be a dark horse for Rookie of the Year.
. SF

The Pistons also had one pick in the second round, the 38th overall selection. They used that to select another wing in Darrun Hilliard from the Villanova Wildcats.

SF. Villanova Wildcats. DARRUN HILLIARD. B-.
Hilliard isn’t a player similar to most taken in the second round in that he doesn’t have a great deal of upside. His ability to create offensively is extremely limited and he’s not a particularly overwhelming athlete. However, Hilliard proved to be a perimeter scoring threat at Villanova in terms of his outside shooting, hitting on 39.9 percent of his threes over his junior and senior years. If he can expand on his already existent discipline as a defender, Hilliard could wind up being a solid three-and-D guy for Detroit.
