Key Offseason Losses

Golden State comes into the 2015-16 season as another team who actually gained a great deal by parting ways with someone on their roster. No doubt that gain through loss comes in the form of trading veteran big man David Lee.

Trading Lee not only tremendously helped the Golden State salary cap situation as his massive deal was moved off of the books, but they eventually flipped him to ultimately grab a more usable piece in their fast-paced two-way system that led them to the title last season, a system Lee never totally fit in.

While you shouldn’t expect a tremendous drop off given the talent on the roster and the prowess of Steve Kerr as the head coach, it’s worth mentioning the loss of Alvin Gentry as an assistant for the Warriors as he took the head coaching job with the New Orleans Pelicans. Gentry’s offensive mind was integral in the Warriors’ development and it’ll be interesting to see if his departure affects the team.

Key Offseason Additions

The Warriors weren’t incredibly active this offseason as they only added two new pieces. The team recently waived one of those pieces in Chris Babb, who was acquired from the Celtics in the David Lee deal. That makes his arrival to the team this offseason virtually inconsequential.

However, one move of consequence that resulted from the David Lee trade was the acquisition of Jason Thompson. After Golden State acquired Gerald Wallace from Boston, they then moved Wallace to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Jason Thompson. Thompson has the potential to be a very nice addition to their second-unit and a guy who can help that bench unit put points on the board within the Warriors’ system.
