It was a historic weekend for the National Football League, as Sunday marked the first time in league history that a game was broadcast exclusively via online live stream. Sunday’s webcast between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills drew mixed reviews from the Twitterati, but there was no denying its financial success. A boatload (see: 33+ million people) tuned in to watch the event from over in England.

As far as on-field product is concerned, Week 7 was more than a little combustable. The AFC South in particular was the equivalent of a bin full of oily rags being dropped into an incinerator. The conference was 1-3 on the day, with two of the losses coming in the way of unsightly blowouts. The Houston Texans made Ryan Tannehill look like a Hall of Famer and were absolutely throttled by the Miami Dolphins. At the same time, Indianapolis lofted up a stinker for three quarters of its game against the New Orleans Saints. And while the final score was close, there were many calling for head coach Chuck Pagano’s head at halftime.

Elsewhere, the New York Jets looked valiant in defeat to the Patriots – though head coach Todd Bowles’ clock management at the end of the game was less-than-stellar. Meanwhile the Carolina Panthers put down the Philadelphia Eagles, and further made their case as the most balanced team in the NFL.

As the long season grinds on, there is a clear delineation between the top tier – New England, Green Bay, Cincinnati, Carolina – and the dregs – hello, Houston. However, right in the middle is a large group of Jekyll and Hydes. Teams like Minnesota, St. Louis, New York (Giants) and Oakland have all at times looked both unbeatable and flat out awful.

It’s quite the interesting NFL season, with more parity than the league has seen in quite some time. Onwards to the Week 7 NFL Power Rankings.
