Here are my FanDuel college football picks for October 29:
Next: Who Will Put Up Big Numbers At QB?
Oct 17, 2015; Ames, IA, USA; TCU Horned Frogs quarterback Trevone Boykin (2) carries the football against the Iowa State Cyclones in the second quarter at Jack Trice Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Reese Strickland-USA TODAY Sports
Quarterback:
Best Bet:
Trevone Boykin, TCU ($11,000): It is hard to recommend spending this much on a player, but Boykin’s stats are incredible. Forget the fact that West Virginia is in the bottom half in both run defense and pass defense. Boykin has 25 passing touchdown in just seven games! He also has five rushing touchdowns on the season. What does that mean? Boykin is averaging 25 points a week just on touchdowns! That doesn’t include passing or rushing yards! West Virginia has been liberal with yards and points. Expect another Heisman-worthy day from Boykin.
Honorable Mention:
Mike Bercovici, Arizona State ($7,800): Bercovici has had issues with the good defenses that Arizona State has played. Oregon is not one of those. The Ducks are 123rd in the nation, allowing 306.6 passing yards per game. His matchups against not-so-sound pass defenses have resulted in good days for Bercovici. He averaged 31 FanDuel points per game against UCLA, Colorado, and New Mexico. He should be in that range again against Oregon.
Dark Horse:
Kevin Ellison, Georgia Southern ($6,200): Ellison is not a prolific passer, but he is a good runner, and a good decision maker in the Eagles’ option attack. They are also taking on a Texas State team that has been awful against the run. Ellison could put up some very nice numbers at a reasonable price.
My pick: Ellison
Aug 30, 2014; Raleigh, NC: North Carolina State Wolfpack fans react as Georgia Southern Eagles running back Matthew Breida (36) scores a touchdown during the first quarter at Carter Finley Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Rob Kinnan-USA Today
Running Back:
Best Bets:
Matt Breida, Georgia Southern ($8,200): You may be wondering why a back from a small school that splits up carries is listed at the top here. I will enlighten you. Breida is another one of those unheralded backs that I am so fond of. I am especially fond of them when they are taking on a team that allows 258.5 rushing yards per game, bad enough for 124th in the country. Don’t worry about Breida splitting carries. The Eagles will likely run upwards of 50 times in this game. Breida should get at least half those carries.
Darius Jackson, Eastern Michigan ($7,400): Jackson has been one of the few bright spots for the Eagles this year. Jackson has three straight and five overall games of over 100 yards rushing. He narrowly missed a third against Ball State when he totaled 97 rushing yards. Akron and LSU were the only teams to hold Jackson under 20 FanDuel points. Don’t expect Western Michigan’s 79th ranked run defense to have much success stopping him either.
Honorable Mention:
Jamauri Bogan, Western Michigan ($6,500): Eastern Michigan is still dead last in run defense, allowing an astonishing 340.3 rushing yards per game. That is nearly 50 yards per game worse than number 127 (New Mexico State). Bogan has seen the larger portion of the timeshare with Jarvion Franklin lately, but neither of them are a bad play here. In fact, I support playing both of them at the flex position in DraftKings.
Demario Richard, Arizona State ($6,700): Oregon’s run defense has been decent, but Richard is also a good receiver out of the backfield. He has 18 catches for 240 yards and a pair of touchdowns through the air. Even if the Ducks do manage to limit him some on the ground, expect Richard to get something going on the receiving end.
Dark Horse:
Wesley Fields, Georgia Southern ($4,900): In games against Louisiana-Monroe and New Mexico State, both of whom have bad run defenses, Fields scored 43.5 FanDuel points. In all others, he has scored 23.7. There is a clear pattern here. That pattern also states that Fields could see some action against Texas State, and be productive in those touches.
My picks: Breida and Jackson
Next: Should You Pay For Josh Doctson?
Oct 17, 2015; Seattle, WA, USA; Oregon Ducks wide receiver Darren Carrington (7) hurdles a tackle by Washington Huskies defensive back Budda Baker (32) during the third quarter at Husky Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jennifer Buchanan-USA TODAY Sports
Wide Receiver:
Best Bets:
Josh Doctson, TCU ($9,400): Doctson already has school records with 60 receptions and 12 touchdowns on the season, and there are still five games left! He also has 1,067 receiving yards. He is Trevone Boykin’s go to receiver when everything isn’t as planned. Doctson has at least seven catches in each of the last four games, and more than one touchdown in five straight games. I want to know how you can afford not to play him. I would take Doctson over Boykin since it is hard to afford both and still field a good lineup, and the dropoff is more steep at WR than QB.
Daniel Braverman, Western Michigan ($8,500): Eastern Michigan’s pass defense has been very good because everyone has run on them, but take a look at Braverman’s stats. Ohio was the only team to hold him under 100 yards (the Broncos played both Michigan State and Ohio State out of conference), and he has racked up seven touchdowns in the last three games. The Broncos may not throw much, but when they do, they will throw to Braverman. You can count on that!
Honorable Mention:
Darren Carrington, Oregon ($7,300): Carrington was a huge piece missing for the Ducks this year after serving a six game suspension. He returned to the field with five catches for 125 yards and both of Vernon Adams’s touchdowns against Washington. The good news for the Ducks is that Arizona State isn’t as good in pass defense as Washington. Expect Carrington to have another productive game.
Kolby Listenbee, TCU ($6,000): Listenbee has picked up where he left off before his hip injury against SMU. With super freshman KaVonte Turpin still likely to be limited, expect Listenbee’s targets and production to be up once again.
Dark Horse:
Devin Lucien, Arizona State ($5,200): The emergence of Lucien and Tim White has led to a big drop in production for D. J. Foster. Part of that is because defenses are keying on him, but not all of it. Lucien is still the cheaper of the three. While he lacks the versatility of Foster and the game-breaking ability of White, Lucien is an outstanding receiver. He caught six passes for 118 yards against a stiff Utah defense. He should find the going much easier against the Ducks.
My picks: Doctson, Carrington, and Lucien
Next: Can You Save Money At TE?
Sep 26, 2015; Buffalo, NY, USA; Buffalo Bulls tight end Matt Weiser (89) runs the ball in for a touchdown after a catch during the first half against the Nevada Wolf Pack at University of Buffalo Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY Sports
Tight End:
Best Bet:
Matt Weiser, Buffalo ($4,000): Weiser has 34 catches for 349 yards on the season. He is a big part of the Buffalo offense no matter where they are on the field, which gives him some good value at the TE position. A large number of TE’s are only red zone targets. Weiser does not fall into this limitation.
Honorable Mention:
Sam Browning, Eastern Michigan ($3,200): Browning has become a growing part of the Eastern Michigan offense. He has 13 catches over the last four games, and has also carried the ball twice. The touchdowns are not plentiful just yet, but that is a product of an offense without a whole lot of talent. Browning is a risk because of that, but the fact that the Eagles are making the extra effort to get him touches takes away some of the risk.
Dark Horse:
Chris Hudson, Miami(Ohio) ($2,000): Hudson has caught seven passes for 107 yards and a touchdown over the last two games. Look for Hudson to continue to be a part of the offense, though the relative ineptitude of the Redhawk offense makes it hard to trust anyone in fantasy.
My pick: Hudson
