You don’t have to reach back very far at all into the archive to find the greatest moment in the history of the Golden State Warriors. It happened just a few months ago as the Warriors led by league MVP Stephen Curry and rookie head coach Steve Kerr were able to come out of nowhere and deliver a historic regular season and close the deal by winning the 2015 NBA Championship.

I’m aware that the Warriors have won other titles in their franchise history and that’s not why this one stands out as the greatest moment in history. Recent bias isn’t a part of the decision, either. Rather, the Warriors winning the title last season comes in as the best moment in team history because they blew expectations out of the water, revolutionized the modern NBA, and put together a historical run to the title, doing all of that with flare.

Save for a few rare analysts, many people had the Warriors as a mid-tier playoff team that was going to be fun to watch because of Stephen Curry. Instead of living to those expectations, Curry and the Warriors changed the way you have to look at the NBA with their combination of playing at a break-neck pace, scoring at a remarkable efficient rate, and defending at an elite level as well. Oh yeah, they were also wildly entertaining to watch still.

The Warriors finished the regular season just five wins shy of the NBA record for wins in a season and they didn’t let up in the postseason. That success continued into the postseason as they continued to shock the world all the way to hoisting the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

Just the entire aura of this team on and off the court made the title win last season such an incredible moment. Whether you think it was an easy road through the postseason or not, you can’t really debate the moment’s place in Warriors’ lore.
