New Orleans Pelicans: Drafting Anthony Davis

Picking the greatest moment in the history of the New Orleans Pelicans is a bit tricky for a number of reasons. For one, they’re an organization who’s still in its youth in terms of its history, limiting the moments that there are to even choose from. The trickiest part with the Pelicans, though, is that the greatest moment in the franchise’s history may have been drafting a player three years ago and who is just barely old enough to legally purchase alcohol.

That player, of course, is Anthony Davis, the top overall pick from the 2012 NBA Draft. It’s a strange thing to say that the selection of a player who hasn’t even sniffed his prime yet is the greatest moment in history, but I just can’t look at Anthony Davis and not see a franchise-altering type of talent whose mere presence changes everything for the Pelicans.

When Davis came out of Kentucky, everyone expected him to be a rim-protecting machine with his length, athleticism, and instincts. What no one expected, though, was that the big man would averaging a double-double in just his third season in the league and would be a dark horse MVP candidate heading into his fourth NBA season. But that’s where we are at with Davis.

Davis legitimately is showing things right now that make you wonder if he could become an all-time great by the end of his career, which is nothing to take lightly. Maybe it’s jumping the gun, but adding a player like that without question qualifies as the greatest moment in this young franchise’s history.
