Sacramento Kings: 2002 NBA Playoffs

I almost feel bad for saying that this is the greatest moment in the history of the Sacramento Kings because that almost feels like rubbing salt in the old wounds of Kings fans. However, there’s no greater moment for the team out of Sacramento than their run to the Western Conference Finals in the 2002 NBA Playoffs.

There haven’t been many more teams that were quite as entertaining as this iteration of the Kings. With Chris Webber, Peja Stojakovic, Mike Bibby, Hedo Turkoglu, Vlade Divac, and many more, the Kings were wrought with talent and played a unique and entertaining brand of basketball that was more than pleasing to the eye. More importantly, it brought them success.

Why the thought of the 2002 postseason may bring up bad memories for the Kings and Kings fans is that many people believe that the Lakers had the officials in their pockets during the Western Conference Finals. While I’m not sure I’d go that far, there were a number of calls that favored Los Angeles in key moments of that series that were questionable at best.

Even with that great conspiracy and the Kings ultimately missing out on the NBA Finals, the 2002 playoffs are the glory days of this franchise. Looking back and watching them play, they very well may have been the best team in the NBA that season. There may not be any hardware to prove that, but Kings fans can without question hang their hats on that moment in time.
