Royals’ Edinson Volquez unaware of father’s death, still pitching in World Series
Royals starter Edinson Volquez is pitching in World Series unaware of his father’s death
UPDATE: ESPN is reporting that Volquez was indeed informed of his father’s death just before Game 1. This goes against what the team has reported, and further complicates a personal situation for the Royals pitcher.
The Kansas City Royals were planning on sending Edinson Volquez to the hill for Game 1 of the World Series against the New York Mets. However, with news breaking before the start of the game that Volquez’s father had passed away, people thought that he might be a late scratch. Volquez ended up starting the game nonetheless and pitched like it was any other game.
As it turns out, Volquez still has not learned of his father’s passing. According to a report, the Royals are saying that their starting pitcher has not yet been told the devastating news about the death of his father:
There’s something about Volquez pitching while not knowing this news that is horribly upsetting and saddening. The Royals obviously know the news about the pitcher’s dad, but have chosen not to tell him about it. One can only hope the decision not to tell him was made by his family and not one selfishly made by the ball club.
Volquez has been dealing in the early-going, but after the game is going to be an emotional roller coaster for the Royals pitcher. Our thoughts go out to him and his family.
