Whoops! ESPN shows J.J. Cosentino as Sean Maguire for Halloween
ESPN made a booboo when showing “Sean Maguire” before Saturday’s game.
For the first time since 2012, the Florida State Seminoles will not finish the regular season undefeated. In another rare instance, Florida State will not have its expected starter performing under center.
According to the official Florida State Twitter account, Sean Maguire will replace injured starter Everett Golson as the Seminoles’ quarterback against the Syracuse Orange.
Florida State was 6-1 with Golson under center, infamously enduring its lone loss on a blocked field goal that was returned for a 78-yard touchdown.
Individually, Golson has been huge for Florida State in 2015. He owns 11 passing touchdowns to just one interception, tallying a pair of 300-yard performances and a completion percentage of 67.2.
With Golson set to miss the Seminoles’ game against the Orange, however, Florida State will trust Maguire to thrive in just his second career start.
The issue, of course, is that the player pictured is not Sean Maguire.
The silver lining is that the player pictured is a quarterback—one who could, one day, serve under center in Tallahassee. It’s J.J. Cosentino, who was a four-star recruit coming out of high school and a redshirt in 2014.
If Maguire struggles, Cosentino could end up receiving snaps as soon as the Syracuse game.
The blunder, however, fails to illustrate the actual player who will be working under center. That player, Maguire, has already earned a prolific distinction amongst Seminoles fans.
In 2014, Maguire started for the suspended Jameis Winston against the Top 25 Clemson tigers. He led Florida State to a 23-17 win, going 21-of-39 for 304 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
His lone touchdown pass was a 74-yard bomb to Rashad Greene with 6:04 remaining in the fourth quarter. That play tied the game at 17-17.
Jimbo Fisher clearly hopes to recreate that magic against Syracuse.
In two appearances in 2015, Maguire has gone 7-of-8 on passing attempts for 73 yards and a touchdown. He was 6-of-7 for 68 yards and a score in the season-opener against the Texas State Bobcats.
Now slated to face the 3-4 Orange, Maguire can only hope that he represents his team better than ESPN represented him.
