The New York Mets are already thinking about their offseason, and that will probably involve letting Yoenis Cespedes walk.
With the noose tightening on the New York Mets in the World Series, attention is starting to turn towards what the team can do in the offseason to get better for a run next year. All hope isn’t lost that the Mets can do what the Royals did these last two years and make consecutive trips to the World Series.
But before that can happen, the Mets need to make sure they go out and make things happen in the winter months — which might include letting some big pieces of this World Series team walk.
According to Jon Heyman from CBS Sports, the Mets are leaning towards letting Yoenis Cespedes walk in free agency to save money that can be used to bolster the bullpen.
"There is increasing belief the Mets will let Yoenis Cespedes walk for big bucks via free agency. Though Cespedes has played brilliantly for them, people around the game figure they will save the big bucks for their vaunted young pitching staff"
This is a move that is going to polarize fans. On the one hand, the logic that you need the money to pay the young pitching staff makes sense. But on the other hand, the Mets season didn’t turn around until they saw run production from Cespedes, and that helped carry them in a big way.
Daniel Murphy gets credit for going ham in the NLCS against the Cubs, but the Mets need to make sure they have the run support to aide their pitching staff or they could have a year where they shut teams down but can’t overpower them with runs they aren’t getting run sluggers they need.
