Stanford went on the road Saturday night to a hostile environment in Pullman to face Washington State

Saturday night the No. 8 Stanford Cardinal went on the road to Pullman to take on a Washington State Cougars team that has been rather impressive as of late and still has Pac-12 aspirations.

If you were looking for an offensive shootout in this one to start, then you were probably disappointed. Washington State took a 12-3 lead into the half against Stanford, off of four field goals from Erik Powell, with a long of 47. This Stanford team, whose offense has been on a tear lately, looked about as sluggish as they’ve been this year since the Northwestern debacle in the opener.

After Washington State kicked yet another field goal in the third quarter to further their lead to 15-3, Stanford would end the no-touchdown drought. Following a big run from Kevin Hogan, Cardinal running back Remound Wright dove into the end zone from two yards out to cut things to 15-10 in Pullman. On the ensuing drive, though, Washington State would get in on the touchdown party with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Luke Falk to Gabe Marks.

Just when some were even starting to write the Cardinal off, they added a field goal in the third, followed by a 59-yard touchdown run to come within 22-20.

Not long after the fourth quarter got underway, following a Falk interception, Hogan would add another rushing touchdown to his night, this one from six yards out to give Stanford the lead back at 27-22.

Washington State was not going down without a fight in the fourth, as Falk hit River Cracraft with a touchdown strike from one yard out. The two-point conversion would fail, though, putting the score at 28-27. With just under two minutes to go, the Washington State defense held Stanford to a field goal near the goal line, handing them the lead back at 30-28.

As time was running down, the Cougars would drive the field and get Powell set up for the game-winning, 43-yard field goal attempt with just four seconds on the clock, which he would miss.
