Steve Spurrier shows up to the Heisman House’s New Year’s Eve party super classy but sans shirt in Nissan’s most recent college football ad.
The Head Ball Coach and 1966 Heisman Trophy Winner Steve Spurrier is taking it real easy since hanging up the visor a few weeks back. He appears at the Heisman House’s New Year’s Eve party as dapper as ever, sporting a black blazer and even a bow tie. The problem that 2011 Award Winner Robert Griffin III has with Spurrier’s get-up is that he is shirtless.
Griffin states, “Not enough, Coach” after telling 1980 Award Winner George Rogers “too much” for his beyond scarlet attire. While Spurrier won his Trophy with the Florida Gator, it’s interesting that the two most iconic men in South Carolina Gamecocks college football history appear in the same 30-second advertisement.
At first glance, one might have confused the overdressed Rogers for the sharp dressed man known as 1983 Award Winner Mike Rozier. After a few views, it is clear that it is George Rogers, as the scarlet suit is a dead giveaway.
These Heisman House commercials have prominently featured both NFL stars and long-retired ball players, yet this was the first to show the Head Ball Coach. From Herschel Walker to Jim Plunkett to Charles Woodson to Roger Staubach, we were beginning to wonder when Steve Spurrier would star in a Nissan spot.
His first commercial doesn’t disappoint. He didn’t throw his visor, but showed the rest of the Heisman House how he likes to party: shirtless. Spurrier has always had fun in his football life. Even a few weeks into this abrupt retirement from coaching the South Carolina Gamecocks, the Head Ball Coach is still the Head Ball Coach: one of the most interesting men in college football.
Spurrier won a Heisman and is the best coach in school history at both the University of Florida and the University of South Carolina. He can do what he wants, Robert. He’s the Head Ball Coach.
