Former Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart laid into ex-Titans head coach Ken Whisenhunt after he was fired on Tuesday

The news of Ken Whisenhunt’s sacking has certainly shocked some, but not everyone was out in mourning. While current Titan players are mixed about the firing of Whisenhunt on Tuesday, there are some ex-Whisenhunt players who aren’t so sad about the news.

Matt Leinart isn’t only not sad about the news, he’s actually pretty ecstatic.

Whisenhunt has gone 3-20 with the Titans, so his record perhaps supports Leinart’s critique. However, firing your head coach midway through a season with a rookie quarterback seems odd, and perhaps Leinart’s comments stem from past bitterness.

Leinart played under Whisenhunt while at the Arizona Cardinals. The 2004 Heisman trophy winner was selected tenth overall in the 2006 draft, and played as back up to Kurt Warner for 4 seasons. When Warner duly retired in 2010, Leinart was assumed by many to take the starting job.

He was, however, overlooked by Whisenhunt in favor of Derek Anderson. The following season the Cardinals ended 5-11. Leinart actually had some interesting words to say about his time in Arizona when the Titans hired his Ken Whisenhunt:

"“I don’t think it’s a great fit, and I don’t think it’s great timing, and here’s why. You look at his tenure in Arizona — only two years, he had success, and in those two years, Kurt Warner ran that football team — I was a part of it. Every single Monday, Kurt Warner would come in an implement 20-to-30 new plays which he would say ‘I want these in my game plan.’ We became a spread offense and we became Kurt Warner’s offense. Then Kurt Warner retires, they go 5-11 twice and they go 8-8.”"

Whether these comments are driven by bitterness or otherwise, Leinart clearly does not rate Whisenhunt as a head coach, and he once again made his feelings known on twitter.

Kurt Warner, on the other hand, defended Whisenhunt on twitter.

The battle of opinions between the two ex-teammates perhaps reflects the difference in success while playing under Whisenhunt. Whatever the case, Leinart is not impressed by Whisenhunt’s tenure at Tennesse and is most definitely pleased with the decision.
