88-74, AL West champions, lost in ALDS

After losing ace Yu Darvish right before the season, Texas seemed doomed to repeat its injury-plagued 2014 campaign. However, the Rangers were able to defy all expectations and take the AL West crown behind a 46-28 record in the second half.

Somehow, the rotation was able to succeed enough without Darvish for the entire season and Martin Perez and Derek Holland for most of it. Yovani Gallardo proved to be a key acquisition, as he posted a 3.41 ERA (4.00 FIP) per FanGraphs as Texas’ best starter for most of the season.

The second half surge was fueled in part by the acquisition of Cole Hamels at the trade deadline. Hamels not only helped Texas reach the postseason this year, but will be around until at least 2018 to give Texas a nice rotation moving forward.

A pair of bounce back players led the way offensively for Texas. Prince Fielder and Shin-Soo Choo both recovered from injury-shortened years, and both contracts don’t look nearly as bad as they did entering this season.

Texas had a great chance to make it to the ALCS, but melted down with three errors in the seventh inning of Game 5 of the ALDS against Toronto. Still, the Rangers should be thrilled with a very successful season.

Success. Nobody could have seen a playoff berth coming after losing Darvish, and Texas appears to be in good shape for next season.
