99. 1982 St. Louis Cardinals
92-70, NL East Champions, Won World Series 4-3 Over Milwaukee
One of the least powerful World Champion lineups in the modern era, the 1982 St. Louis Cardinals hit just 67 home runs during the regular season, which ranked dead last in the National League. Outfielder George Hendrick led the squad with 19 homers and also drove in 104 runs while hitting .282/.323/.450.
Of course, just because the Cardinals didn’t rely on the long ball doesn’t mean they weren’t a dynamic offense. St. Louis stole 200 bases over the course of the season, which led the league. Lonnie Smith was the runner-up to Atlanta’s Dale Murphy for the NL MVP Award in a season in which he hit .307/.381/.434 with 69 RBI and 68 stolen bases, former MVP Keith Hernandez hit .299/.397/.413 with 94 RBI, and Ozzie Smith and Willie McGee put a lot of pressure on the defense with their speed.
Speed, defense, and a strong pitching staff led by Hall of Fame closer Bruce Sutter (9-8. 2.90 ERA, 36 saves, 102.1 innings), helped the Cardinals dispose of the Braves 3-0 in the NLCS before beating the Milwaukee Brewers in a seven-game World Series.
