87. 1958 New York Yankees

92-62, AL Champions, Won World Series 4-3 Over Milwaukee

Though they only won 92 games during the regular season, the 1958 New York Yankees made quick work of the American League and won the pennant by a commanding ten games over the second place Chicago White Sox.

Hall of Fame starting pitcher Whitey Ford posted one of the best seasons of his career with a 14-7 record and a 2.01 ERA, and teamed with Bob Turley (21-7, 2.97 ERA, AL-best 19 complete games), Don Larsen (9-6, 3.07) and reliever Ryne Duren (2.02, 19 saves) on the league’s toughest pitching staff. The Yankees led the AL with a 3.22 team ERA.

Of course, the biggest stars of the team were outfielder Mickey Mantle (.304/.442/.592, 42 HR, 97 RBI) and catcher Yogi Berra (.266/.319/.790, 22 HR, 90 RBI), who led a potent New York lineup that led the league in almost every major offensive category including runs (759), hits (1,418), home runs (164), batting average (.268), slugging percentage (.416) and OPS (.751).

After winning the AL in a rout, the Yankees were pushed to the limit by the Milwaukee Braves in a World Series rematch. After falling behind 2-0 and 3-1 in the Series, New York stormed back to take the final three games to capture the 18th World Championship in franchise history.
