98-64, AL East Champions, Won World Series 4-1 Over Philadelphia

In only the second season in his legendary 21-year Hall of Fame career, a 22-year old Cal Ripken, Jr. won the American League MVP Award with a .318/.371/.517 slash, 27 home runs, 102 RBI an AL-best 121 runs scored and a Major League-leading 211 hits and 47 doubles. Ripken, along with fellow future Hall of Famer Eddie Murray (.306/.393/.538, 33 HR, 111 RBI), posted a 98-64 record and won the AL East by six games over strong Detroit and New York clubs that won 92 and 91 games, respectively.

Baltimore made quick work of the Chicago White Sox in the ALCS, winning the series 3-1 before moving on to the World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies. After dropping Game 1 by a score of 2-1, the O’s won four straight despite scoring five or fewer runs in each game. Catcher Rick Dempsey hit .385/.467/.923 with five extra-base hits to earn World Series MVP honors, and Hall of Famer Jim Palmer picked up a win in relief in Game 3.
