54. 1923 New York Yankees
98-54, AL Champions, Won World Series 4-2 Over New York
The New York Yankees have won 27 World Championships, which is far and away the most in Major League Baseball history. The 1923 Yankees, the 21st the franchise fielded since moving from Baltimore, were the first to win it all.
With a record of 98-54, the Yankees ran away with the American League pennant by 16 games and entered the Fall Classic with a full head of steam. Facing the New York Giants, who beat the Yankees in both 1921 and 1922, the Yankees finally got over the hump with a 4-2 series victory thanks in large part to Babe Ruth.
Ruth, who had already won the World Series three times with the Boston Red Sox and would go on to three more titles with the Yankees, hit .368/.556/1.000 in the World Series with three solo home runs. The 28-year old slugger also won his first and only AL MVP Award by hitting .393/.545/.764 with 41 home runs and 130 RBI.
Not just an offensive juggernaut, the Yankees boasted the best pitching staff in the American League, with Bullett Joe Bush (19-15, 3.43), Bob Shawkey (16-11, 3.51), Sad Sam Jones (21-8, 3.63) and Hall of Famers Waite Hoyt (17-9, 3.02) and Herb Pennock (19-6, 3.13) handling the vast majority of the pitching duties for a staff that led the AL with a 3.62 team ERA.
