90-54, NL East Champions, Won World Series 4-2 Over Cleveland

In a shortened season as a result of the player’s strike the previous year, the 1995 Atlanta Braves completely dominated the National League East and won the division by a staggering 21 games with a record of 90-54.

Hall of Fame ace Greg Maddux (19-2, 1.63) won his fourth consecutive NL Cy Young Award and tossed complete games in ten of his 28 starts. Maddux combined with Tom Glavine (16-7, 3.08), John Smoltz (12-7, 3.18) and closer Mark Wholers (2.09, 25 saves) to give the Braves the best ERA in the NL (3.44), and the staff also allowed the fewest hits (1,184), runs (540), and home runs (107) while posting the most strikeouts (1,087) and complete games (18).

Such a strong pitching staff made up for a rather mediocre offense that scored just 645 runs, which ranked ninth in the National League, and posted a .250 team batting average, which was 13th among the 14 NL teams. Fred McGriff (27 HR, 93 RBI), David Justice (24 HR, 78 RBI), Chipper Jones (23 HR, 86 RBI) and Ryan Klesko (23 HR, 70 RBI) helped power the Braves to 168 home runs, which was the second most in the league.

The Braves defeated Cleveland, who posted a 100-44 regular season record, 4-2 in the World Series to capture the first and only World Series championship for the Atlanta Braves since the franchise moved from Milwaukee in 1966.
