49. 1908 Chicago Cubs

99-55, NL Champions, Won World Series 4-1 Over Detroit

Want to know how different baseball was in 1908? A 2.14 team ERA ranked third in the National League, and a lineup that combined to hit 19 home runs was in the middle of the pack in the league in power. A .249 batting average and .311 on-base percentage were both the second best in the NL.

Oh, and the Chicago Cubs won the World Series.

As most baseball fans know, the ’08 Cubs were the last in franchise history to win the World Series, and actually captured their second straight World Championship with a 4-1 series victory over the Detroit Tigers. Hall of Fame ace Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown won both Game 1 and Game 4 of the series.

Brown posted a career-high 29 victories with a 1.47 ERA for the Cubs, who won the tightest pennant race in NL history with a 99-55 record that was one game better than both the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Joe Tinker as the team’s best offensive weapon, and led the team with 14 triples, six home runs and 68 RBI.
