48. 1920 Cleveland Indians
98-56, AL Champions, Won World Series 5-2 Over Brooklyn
The 1920 Cleveland Indians won the American League pennant for the very first time with a record of 98-56, which was just two games better than the Chicago White Sox and three more victories than the New York Yankees. With a 5-2 series victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers, Cleveland captured the first World Championship in franchise history.
One of the greatest outfielders of all-time, Hall of Famer Tris Speaker hit .388/.483/.562 with 50 doubles, 11 triples, eight home runs and 107 RBI for the Indians, and also scored 137 runs. Larry Gardner and Elmer Smith, who led the team with 12 home runs, also drove in more than 100 runs, and shortstop Ray Chapman scored 97 runs, which was the second most on the team. Tragically, Chapman was killed when hit by a pitch August 17.
Jim Bagby anchored the Cleveland pitching staff, and posted a 31-12 record in 48 games (including 38 starts, 30 of which were complete games) with a 2.89 ERA, and Stan Coveleski was 24-14 with a 2.49 ERA for the team that posted the second best ERA in the AL (3.41).
