37. 2005 Chicago White Sox
99-63, AL Central Champions, Won World Series 4-0 Over Houston
The Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox have received the bulk of the attention for historic World Championship droughts, but one season after the Red Sox snapped an 86-year losing streak, the 2005 Chicago White Sox won the Fall Classic for the first time since 1917.
With a regular season record of 99-63, which included a remarkable 52-29 record on the road, the White Sox won the American League Central by six games. Chicago was dominant in the postseason as well and beat Boston 3-0 in the Division Series before knocking off the Los Angeles Angels four games to one in the ALCS to capture the first pennant for the franchise since 1959.
Though two runs or fewer decided every game, including a 1-0 five-hit gem in Game 4, the White Sox swept the Houston Astros to win the World Series for the first time in 88 years.
Mark Buehrle (16-8, 3.12) Freddie Garcia (14-8, 3.87), Jon Garland (18-10, 3.50), Dustin Hermanson (2.04 ERA, 34 saves) and Bobby Jenks (2.75 ERA, nine saves in the regular season with two saves in the World Series) led a pitching staff that posted the best ERA in the American League and helped overcome a White Sox lineup that scored only 741 runs, which ranked ninth in the AL.
