Miami Marlins

Everything that makes Zack Greinke attractive to the big National League markets will certainly make him so to the smaller ones as well. That’s why we should never discount the power of familiarity.

By inking newly-minted manager Don Mattingly, the Miami Marlins have brought on one such face of familiarity. Additionally, Mattingly has recently said that bench coach Tim Wallach could follow him to Miami as well.

Greinke experienced three very solid years while pitching for Don Mattingly with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and given his previous issues with anxiety disorder, he may want some stability if he chooses to jump ship to another team. The right-hander also hails from Orlando, Florida and returning to Florida for the final years of his career may not be a complete reach.

That all said, the Marlins haven’t been overly involved in the free agent pitching market since they inked Mark Buehrle to a heavily-deferred deal in 2012. However, they may be a bit more open to dealing now that they’ve committed to their young roster and heavily invested in slugger Giancarlo Stanton.

Given that Jose Fernandez recently declined an extension, Miami may have the funds to commit to a free agent arm. However, given their past, the team would also need to buffer any deal heavily in order to lure a top-tier arm to Miami.
