The Buffalo Bills spent some time debating an extremely important issue that is on everyone’s mind: is a hot dog a sandwich? They got mixed results.

The Buffalo Bills have a 3-4 record this season and are in a position to contend for a wild card. But that’s not important. What’s extremely important is that they had a spirited debate about whether or not a hot dog is a sandwich. Both sides gave excellent points. Let’s take a look at the arguments.

Great point about the bread. The hot dog bun is a piece of bread that is cut in a similar fashion to a Subway sub. If you think that a Subway sub is a sandwich, kind of hard to argue that a hot dog is a sandwich. Buffalo Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor gave an interesting take on the subject.

I think that Taylor is pretty close to being right. A burger is not a sandwich. It deserves to be in its own category because burgers are significantly better than sandwiches. You could call a burger a sandwich though because it has two pieces of bread. A hot dog doesn’t. Karlos Williams and Anthony Dixon touched on the topic and they agree that a hot dog is a sandwich.

If you close up the hot dog, it’s officially a sandwich. But if you don’t, it’s just a hot dog. There is one problem with this argument. What exactly is an open-faced sandwich? That’s a sandwich. It’s not closed up. Whether or not a food item is closed should not determine whether or not it’s a sandwich. Let’s see what Buffalo Bills star Bacarri Rambo thinks about this issue.

Rambo says that a hot dog is not a sandwich because you can eat a hot dog plain. Excellent point sir.

VERDICT: A hot dog is not a sandwich. If you want to qualify it as something, call it a taco. Same basic premise. Meat and condiments surrounded by a single piece of bread. Now, if the bun breaks in half and becomes two pieces of bread, then you can call a hot dog a sandwich.

Here are our very own Mark Carman’s thoughts on the debate.
