Five potential destinations for Matt Stafford in 2016
By Dani Bostick
5. Cleveland Browns
The Browns have had bad luck when it comes to quarterbacks (and football in general, actually). They picked up Johnny Manziel in the first round of the 2014 draft. His rookie year was plagued with off-field problems and substandard performance on the field. After a stint in rehab, the Browns hoped Manziel could take over and lead the team to victory.
Instead of trusting Manziel, they opted to acquire 36-year-old Josh McCown, whose wildly inconsistent performance so far this season has not been the difference-maker the Browns had wanted. Meanwhile, Manziel has been embroiled once again in off-field scandal, most recently involved in a public spat with his girlfriend that many have said was fueled by alcohol.
The Cleveland Browns are 2-6 in the AFC North, their only two victories coming against the 1-6 Tennessee Titans and the struggling 2-6 Baltimore Ravens. Stafford is younger than McCown and more talented than both McCown and Manziel. He has enough years left to be a strong producer within the Browns organization and perhaps change the team’s losing ways. The organization has only had two winning seasons since 1994.
The Browns have some talented players, but without a competent, reliable quarterback they will likely remain the laughing stock of the league.
