Daniel Murphy will receive a $15.8 million qualifying offer from the New York Mets for his incredible postseason performance.

New York Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy is expected to cash in with a big contract in this offseason. He became a postseason hero for the Mets and played a major role in their National League pennant run, but they ultimately fell short against the Kansas City Royals. Although he won’t be cheap, the Mets will make their best efforts to retain their second baseman. CBS Sports baseball writer Jon Heyman reported on the Mets’ plans for Murphy on Twitter.

Murphy is not likely to accept this qualifying offer since he will easily be able to make more. He caught fire in the early part of the postseason, and he heated up even more against the Chicago Cubs in the NLCS by extending his streak of games with home runs to six. Murphy finished with a total of seven home runs with 11 runs batted in and a .328 batting average in the playoffs. However, he disappeared in the World Series by batting 3-for-20 with no RBIs.

Murphy has never shown much power throughout his career, as he has only hit 14 home runs as a career high. However, he has proven to be a consistent hitter with a .288 average. He has also reached at least 65 RBIs three times in his career, but it will be hard to justify paying him a contract that will likely be required to land his services.
