Daniel Murphy is becoming a free agent after becoming a playoff hero for the New York Mets. Which team will he play for next? Here are five that make sense.

Daniel Murphy is the talk of the town right now in Major League Baseball after an incredible postseason that saw him hit seven home runs in 14 playoff games. He had a .328 batting average and an unbelievable OPS of 1.171. That said, I think everyone can agree that he was playing well above his actual talent level.

Murphy has been quietly solid throughout his career. He has a career .755 OPS. That’s not outstanding, but that’s still quite good. He can play a variety of positions and play them well. He likely doesn’t have the bat to be a full-time first baseman, but he can fill in at first base. His bat is at worst average at third base and above average at second base.

The Mets are most likely going to hand Daniel Murphy a qualifying offer, which means that it will cost a first round pick for any team without a protected first round pick (first through 10th) to sign him. If a team with a protected first round pick signs him, they have to surrender their second round pick. Murphy likely won’t return to the Mets. They have a plethora of younger options including Wilmer Flores and highly-touted prospect Dilson Herrera who can fill in capably at second base.

Even with the qualifying offer attached to him, Murphy is going to have no shortage of suitors. Even at the age of 30 (though he turns 31 in April), he’s still a productive player who can play a variety of positions. Players like that have a ton of value. Here are five potential landing spots for Daniel Murphy.
