University of Houston head coach Tom Herman has emerged as a leading candidate for the South Carolina job.
When Steve Spurrier left South Carolina, the search was on for a new head coach to lead the team back to SEC prominence.
Well, it appears that there is a leading candidate for the job at South Carolina. According to 24/7 Sports, University of Houston head coach Tom Herman has emerged as the guy to take over for Spurrier and bring a new vision to South Carolina.
It sounds like Herman’s been on the radar for South Carolina, for some time now.
"Herman has been on the radar of South Carolina athletics director Ray Tanner since 2012, his first as offensive coordinator at Ohio State under Urban Meyer.Herman, in his first year as the head coach of the Cougars, is 8-0 this season and has Houston ranked in the top 25. He’s defeated an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent (Louisville, 34-31) and a Southeastern Conference opponent (Vanderbilt, 34-0) this season."
At Houston, Herman has coached a team that has successfully put themselves in big game conversation, despite not playing in a Power-5 conference. The Cougars have run right through their schedule and have showed no signs of slowing down.
Making the jump to a big program like South Carolina, should he be hired, is a different beast however. Rather than going against the likes of Tulane and other schools, he’s competing against the likes of Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, LSU and others on a consistent basis.
Still, it can’t be understated just how incredible of a job that Herman has done in his first year as a head coach at Houston. To go from one season as a head coach outside of a Power-5 conference, to being in contention for a job at a prominent school in the SEC, shows just how good of a job he has done.
South Carolina is searching for a new head coach, and they may have found their man.
