The Chicago Cubs are doing their homework on free agent outfielders Jason Heyward and Alex Gordon as they pursue a leadoff hitter for their deadly lineup.
The Chicago Cubs figure to be active in free agency this offseason as they are looking to improve a roster that is already among the best in all of baseball. One idea that they are reportedly exploring is adding one of the two hottest offseason commodities, either Jason Heyward or Alex Gordon. The Cubs need a leadoff hitter for the future.
Their decision will likely rely on several factors. First of all, do they want to add another top-tier starter to their rotation? It’s no secret that the Cubs are the favorites to sign David Price. They may be a big-market team, but do they have the money to add both Price (or another top of the rotation arm) and Heyward? Especially when they will likely need to pursue another center fielder if they lose Dexter Fowler?
The Cubs must also consider what they want to do with slugger Kyle Schwarber. They currently have the former catcher in their outfield. He is somewhat of a defensive liability, but his bat clearly justifies regular playing time. With Jorge Soler in the outfield, the Cubs might have no spot for Schwarber should they decide to sign Gordon or Heyward.
They could trade Schwarber for a center fielder. Schwarber’s bat and power potential would likely interest multiple AL teams who would have the luxury of making him their designated hitter. They could also sign free agent center fielder Denard Span (who doesn’t have a qualifying offer attached to him) and have more flexibility regarding their return for Schwarber.
The Chicago Cubs have some important decisions to make as they look to bring the World Series back to the north side of Chicago for the first time since 1908.
