This is not how you play quarterback, Blake Bortles
The Jacksonville Jaguars have largely been a punchline in the NFL over the past few seasons. Considering their lack of wins and instances of incompetence over that time, it’s hard to completely argue with that perception. Blake Bortles didn’t do anything to help with that reputation in Sunday’s game against the New York Jets.
Backed up within the Jacksonville 10-yard line, Bortles dropped back to pass and began rolling to his right to try and buy some time so his receivers could get open. He finally saw something he liked and went to make the throw. The only problem is that he forgot to bring the football with him:

Fumbling against this terrorizing Jets defense is nothing to scoff at by any means. Fumbling against the Jets when their defense had literally nothing to do with it just inexplicable.
To Bortles’ credit, he was able to recover his own fumble and did so without going into the end zone for a safety. However, when that’s the silver lining on a play like that, it’s probably not a good statement on where the Jaguars and Bortles are right now.
Bortles has shown flashes of improvement this season and could still develop into a quality starting quarterback in this league. That being said, not doing things like losing the football for now reason when you’re backed up against your own end zone is something that he’s going to want to keep improving upon.
