Report: It’s ‘virtually certain’ that Colin Kaepernick doesn’t return to San Francisco next season
It’s sounding like Colin Kaepernick will be playing for a new team come next season.
A week after the 49ers benched Colin Kaepernick for backup Blaine Gabbert, a new report has come out saying that it is ‘virtually certain’ that Kaepernick will be cut following this season.
Jason La Canfora of CBS is reporting that the trust between the San Francisco organization and their high-priced quarterback is non-existent, and that barring an injury to Gabbert, Kaepernick won’t play again this season and the 49ers will cut him after the season is over.
This doesn’t come as much of a surprise given how poorly Kaepernick has played this season. He has thrown for six touchdowns and five interceptions and went 2-6 as the starter before he was benched.
Prior to the 2014 season, the 49ers signed Kaepernick to a then record seven-year, $126 million contract with $61 million guaranteed. This contract however had some fancy clauses in it, and it is now going to cost Kaepernick – if he does indeed get cut after the season- a lot of money.
According to Business Insiders, Kaepernick could lose $100 million if he is cut this off-season because of the way his contract was designed.
The tables have totally turned on Kaepernick who once was thought to be a franchise quarterback. His steady decline, however, has made one thing for certain: he has no future in San Francisco.
A change of scenery might be what Kaepernick needs at this point, and it will be curious to see which teams will be interested in his services this off-season if San Francisco is really ready to move on from him.
