Report: Rams to sign veteran wide receiver Wes Welker
The St. Louis Rams are reportedly set to signs wide receiver Wes Welker
The St. Louis Rams offense undoubtedly revolves around rookie running back Todd Gurley. However, Jeff Fisher likes to mix things up with play-action and some deep throws from Nick Foles. The only problem is that his receiving core has been a bit shallow all year. Now it seems as if the Rams might be adding a major weapon to their arsenal in Wes Welker.
After working out wide receivers this week, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com is reporting that the Rams are expected to sign the veteran Welker with the final details of the deal still being ironed out before both parties make it official:
Given the news that Rams receiver Stedman Bailey has been suspended for four games for violating the NFL’s Substance Abuse Policy, it became clear why they were working out receivers. However, I’m not sure anyone expected Welker to be the guy that they ultimately brought in.
Welker played 14 games for the Denver Broncos last season, but has dealt with major injury issues—concussions being the most prevalent problem—over his past few seasons in the league. When healthy and in his prime, though, Welker was one of the most dangerous possession receivers in the NFL.
The 34-year-old posted over 110 catches and over 1,100 yards receiving in five of his six season with the New England Patriots. If he can come anywhere close to that at his age and can also stay healthy, the Rams are going to look much more dangerous on the offensive side of the ball.
