St. Louis Rams worked out WR Wes Welker

The St. Louis Rams worked out veteran wide receiver Wes Welker this morning.
According to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, the St. Louis Rams brought in former New England Patriots and Denver Broncos’ star slot receiver Wes Welker for a workout Monday morning.
The St. Louis Rams fell back to .500 (4-4) after their Week 9 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Though the Rams boast one of the best defenses in the National Football League (6th in points allowed per game), they are 30th in offense, scoring on average 19.1 points per game.
St. Louis ranks dead last in passing in both attempts (222) and yards (1,417), despite having a former Pro Bowler in Nick Foles at quarterback. Without rookie running back Todd Gurley coming on in recent weeks, the mediocre offense of the St. Louis Rams could keep this competitive team out of the eleventh straight year.
Welker, 34, last played for the Denver Broncos in 2014. He is a 5x Pro Bowler and made the NFL’s All-Pro team twice. Welker is just shy of 10,000 career receiving yards (9,822) and has 50 career touchdown receptions.
From 2008 to 2012, Wes Welker was arguably one of the most feared receivers in football. He thrived in the New England Patriots offense as their star slot receiver. When it came time for a contract extension, Welker out played his value to the New England Patriots, opting to sign with the Denver Broncos in 2013.
Would Wes Welker help the St. Louis Rams’ offense? Potentially. He is a sure-handed receiving target, something Nick Foles needs, but does have a bad history with concussions. Though Welker is certainly not a 1,000 yard receiver any more, he could help the St. Louis Rams’ pedestrian passing attack get some lift. A more balanced offensive attack to go along with their impressive defense might stand as enough to get St. Louis their first playoff berth since 2004.
