Here are five pitchers the Chicago Cubs should take a long hard look at in free agency.
The Chicago Cubs are looking to build on a season that saw them finish with a 97-65 record during the regular season. They made it all the way to the NLCS before losing to the New York Mets. They’re an extremely young and talented team. They’re only going to get better from here on out.
The Cubs have other holes to fill, but they are most likely going to aggressively pursue at least one starting pitcher during free agency. Their objective in doing so is so that they can form a deadly trio at the top of the rotation. They already have possible NL Cy Young winner Jake Arrieta and the brutally efficient Jon Lester. Adding one more top of the rotation arm would make the Cubs even more deadly than they already are.
They could also look to improve their bullpen. The Kansas City Royals have created a blueprint for other teams to follow. Having a nasty bullpen is a proven way to win in the playoffs. A bolstered bullpen combined with the Cubs rotation would make Chicago a team that nobody wants to face in October. Look for the Cubs to pursue the following five pitchers in free agency.
