The Atlanta Braves are reportedly in deep trade discussions with an NL West team about Gold Glove shortstop Andrelton Simmons.

The MLB Hot Stove is officially cooking and the offseason is well underway. According to sources, the stove could get hot extremely early in the offseason as the Atlanta Braves are in trade discussions with an NL West team. The subject of those discussions? Shortstop Andrelton Simmons.

This is certainly an interesting development. Acquiring Andrelton Simmons would be a huge upgrade to any team’s infield. Who is this NL West team that’s interested in the two-time Gold Glove winner?

By process of elimination, the Colorado Rockies can be eliminated immediately. They are still paying Jose Reyes a ton of money through the 2017 season. His domestic violence allegations notwithstanding, the Rockies are committed to Reyes for the time being.

It could be the Arizona Diamondbacks. Their interest in Simmons could be why the Diamondbacks are interested in trading a young infielder for Yankees closer Andrew Miller. They have a very talented infield. About the only spot that isn’t currently occupied is at shortstop. It’s not a coincidence that Simmons is a shortstop. Arizona most likely has the pieces necessary to pull the trade off as well.

It’s definitely not the San Francisco Giants. Whether or not Brandon Crawford is a better player than Simmons is a debate that is not worth having. They’re both excellent shortstops. Why would the Giants want to give up on Brandon Crawford? Makes no sense at all.

This sounds like something that the Dodgers would do. They currently have Corey Seager at shortstop for the future. However, they could always move him to third. Plus imagine how much money they could save by having such a cost-effective left side of their infield. That’s a pretty darn incredible left side of the infield as well.

The team that makes the most sense? The Padres. They lack anything resembling a future shortstop. Ian Desmond is the only above-average shortstop in free agency and he’s going to most likely get a regrettable contract. Andrelton Simmons would be a better value for the Padres. Plus they proved last offseason that they are not afraid to pull off huge moves from out of nowhere.
